My beloved note: Cardamom
When it comes to creating fragrances, few ingredients captivate my senses like cardamom. This spice, often associated with culinary delights, holds a special place in my world of perfumery, adding a unique, aromatic complexity to any blend.
Cardamom is primarily cultivated in the lush, tropical regions of India and Guatemala. The plants thrive in humid conditions, producing small, green pods filled with tiny black seeds. These seeds are the true treasure, harvested just before they ripen to preserve their rich aroma.
The extraction of cardamom oil is an intricate process. Using steam distillation, the seeds are gently heated to release their essential oils. This method captures the full spectrum of cardamom's scent profile—spicy, warm, and slightly woody, cool, with a hint of citrus. The resulting oil is a perfumer's dream, offering versatility and depth.
The smell of cardamom is something so unique. It opens with a fresh, almost eucalyptus-like brightness, quickly unfolding into a warm, spicy heart that lingers with a soft, balsamic sweetness. This multifaceted aroma makes it a perfect middle note in perfumes, balancing other ingredients and enhancing the overall composition.
My love affair with cardamom began during my first fragrance project, which I named "Il Dopodomani." This creation was a finalist at the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery. In "Il Dopodomani," cardamom served as an overarching note, embodying the concept of anticipation and future dreams. The spicy warmth of cardamom intertwined with notes of bergamot and amber, creating a fragrance that was both evocative and comforting.
"Il Dopodomani" was more than just a perfume; it was a journey of discovery. The experience taught me the art of balancing ingredients and the importance of each note's role in creating a harmonious blend. Cardamom, with its vibrant and multifaceted aroma, was the perfect ingredient to symbolize the essence of looking forward to the future while savouring the present.
Cardamom remains my favourite ingredient, not just for its aromatic qualities but for its ability to evoke memories and dreams. Every time I use it, I'm reminded of the excitement and passion of my early days in perfumery, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead!
